World Earth Day 2025

The first World Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. In 2025, we will be celebrating the 55th World Earth Day. This special day is important because it teaches us how to take care of our only home, Earth. The celebration of World Earth Day includes events in schools, parks, offices, and even online.

The mission of World Earth Day is to encourage everyone to use clean energy and help stop pollution and climate change. The group that leads the day is called the Earth Day Network. Their big goal is to triple the use of clean energy by the year 2030.

World Earth Day 2025 Theme

The theme of World Earth Day 2025 is “Our Power, Our Planet”. This theme reminds us that everyone has the power to help the planet. Whether big or small, every action counts. Turning off lights, planting a tree, riding a bicycle, or using less plastic can make a big difference.

History of World Earth Day

The idea for World Earth Day started in the 1960s when people began to worry about pollution, dirty air, and the cutting of forests. A writer named Rachel Carson wrote a book called Silent Spring in 1962, which told people how harmful chemicals were hurting animals and plants. This made many people start caring about the environment.

Later, in 1969, there was a big oil spill in Santa Barbara, USA, which caused harm to sea animals. This event made even more people want to protect nature. That same year, a peace activist named John McConnell suggested having a special day to honour the Earth. A U.S. senator named Gaylord Nelson and activist Denis Hayes helped plan the first World Earth Day in 1970.

It became a huge success and later, in 1972, the United Nations officially made it an international event. Since then, World Earth Day has grown into a global celebration.

Significance of World Earth Day

World Earth Day is very important because it tells us that we all share one Earth. If we do not take care of it, the air may get too dirty to breathe, the oceans may fill with trash, and many animals may disappear. That’s why World Earth Day is not just a one-day event but a reminder to take action every day.

The day helps raise awareness about problems like:

  • Climate change
  • Cutting down too many trees
  • Air and water pollution
  • Waste of resources
  • Animal extinction

On World Earth Day, schools teach kids about saving the Earth. People join hands to clean up beaches, forests, and cities. Communities hold events to spread knowledge and bring change.

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is another event that supports the same ideas as World Earth Day. It started in 2007 by the World Wide Fund (WWF). On this day, people are asked to turn off lights for one hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. It is a way to show support for the planet.

Even though Earth Hour lasts for just 60 minutes, it helps people think about how to save energy every day. It connects people around the world in a common cause — helping the Earth.

World Earth Day – Indian Government Initiatives

India takes World Earth Day very seriously. Many government programs are helping the environment. Some important ones are:

  • UJALA Scheme: This program gave 22.66 crore LED bulbs to people. LED bulbs save electricity and help the environment. This program saved over Rs 11,776 crore and reduced 24 metric tons of carbon emissions every year.
  • Ujjwala Yojana: This program gives free LPG connections to poor women. Cooking with clean fuel like LPG helps women stay healthy and saves forests from being cut for firewood.
  • Swachh Bharat Mission: This program helps keep cities clean. It also turns waste into energy and recycles water. Over 23,277 million liters of water is cleaned every day in 816 plants.
  • Green India Mission: This mission helps plant trees on empty lands. It aims to increase forest cover by 5 million hectares, which can trap 100 million tons of carbon every year.
  • Green Credit Program: People can now earn Green Credits by doing eco-friendly things like planting trees or saving water.
  • Global Biofuel Alliance: India also supports using biofuels (like fuel from plants and waste) to reduce pollution.
  • International Solar Alliance (ISA): Started by India and France, this alliance wants to bring $1 trillion in solar investments by 2030. This will give clean energy to many countries.
  • Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE): This program tells people to live in a way that saves nature. It asks us to reduce waste, reuse things, and recycle materials.
