Padma Vibhushan awardees include Osamu Suzuki, who transformed India’s automotive industry, and Justice (Retd.) J. S. Khehar, known for outlawing triple talaq. Other recipients are folk singer Sharda Sinha (posthumous), gastroenterologist Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy, writer M. T. Vasudevan Nair, violinist L. Subramaniam, and Kathak dancer Kumudini Lakhia.

The Padma Bhushan was awarded to 19 individuals, including economist Bibek Debroy (posthumous), ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, and hockey star P. R. Sreejesh. With 113 Padma Shri awards, this year’s honors highlight excellence in arts, education, trade, and medicine, including 23 women and 13 posthumous recipients.

History of Padma Awards

The Padma Awards, established in 1954, have been announced annually on Republic Day, except during certain political transitions (1978, 1979, and 1993-1997). Initially classified as Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg, and Tisra Varg, they were renamed Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri in 1955.

Padma Awards are open to both Indian citizens and foreigners for exceptional contributions to India or global progress, the awards have honored 343 Padma Vibhushan, 1339 Padma Bhushan, and 3644 Padma Shri recipients to date. While celebrating individual excellence, they emphasize societal impact and transformative contributions.

Selection Process of Padma Awardee

The Padma Awardees are selected through a multi-stage process, starting with nominations from the public, state governments, and ministries. Here is the procedure adopted for the selection process:

  • Nomination: Open to the public, allowing individuals to nominate others or self-nominate.
  • Screening: Nominations are reviewed by the Padma Awards Committee, constituted by the Prime Minister.
