MPSC Full Form History of MPSC

MPSC full form is Maharashtra Public Service Commission. It came into existence on 1st May 1960, on the day of the formation of the State, Maharashtra. The formation of MPSC was highly felt essential for accepting the authority before matters of recruiting candidates for various services under the government of the State of Maharashtra. Before the existence of the MPSC, recruitment for government posts in this region was made by the Public Service Commissions of the respective states from which the State of Maharashtra is formed.

It conducted recruitments for the civil services in Maharashtra in a totally fair and open manner by way of an examination and interviews; however, the Commission was also supposed to advise the State Government on matters about recruitment, transfer, and disciplinary action against civil servants.

MPSC Full Form Functions of MPSC

MPSC Function– Under Article 320 of the Constitution of India, MPSC has been entrusted with the following major functions:-

  • To conduct examinations for appointments to the services of the Government of Maharashtra 
  • To advise the State Government on:-
    • (a) Matters relating to methods of recruitment to the various services.
    • (b) Suitability of candidates for appointment to the services through promotions, deputations, nominations, and transfers.
    • (c) Disciplinary matters affecting Government servants.
    • (d) Claims for reimbursement of legal expenses incurred by Government servants while defending legal proceedings instituted against them for acts done or purporting to be done in the execution of their duties.
    • (e) Claims for the award of injury/family pension to Government servants and,
    • (f) Any other matter referred to them by the Governor
  1. Under Section 80-B of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, the Commission has been entrusted with the responsibility of advising:-
    • (1) The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai regarding appointments to posts under the control of the Corporation, which are equivalent to or higher than the post of Executive Engineer, and
    • (2) The Mumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking regarding appointments to posts in Grade A-II.
