On May 26, 2025, the Government of India unveiled a cutting-edge weather forecasting model. The Bharat Forecast System (BFS) at a ceremony held in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Developed indigenously by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and launched under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, BFS is a major leap in India’s weather prediction infrastructure. With a spatial resolution of 6 km, the highest in the world, this system significantly enhances the accuracy and localisation of weather forecasts across the country.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh described the system as a symbol of India’s scientific self-reliance and technological advancement, stating that BFS places India among the global leaders in meteorology. The launch also aligns with national initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, reinforcing India’s position as the world’s 4th largest economy with a scientific vision for inclusive development.
The Bharat Forecast System is a numerical weather prediction model designed to deliver high-resolution weather forecasts tailored to India’s unique geographic and climatic needs. Unlike previous models, BFS operates on a 6-kilometre grid, doubling the resolution of the older 12-km Global Forecast System (GFS) used earlier. This significant upgrade enables village-level forecasting and brings much greater precision in predicting regional weather events like monsoons, cyclones, and floods.

Backed by 11.77 petaflops of computing power and 33 petabytes of data storage, BFS became operational following the installation of the supercomputer Arka at IITM in 2024. Its advanced computational capabilities allow real-time data processing using the Triangular Cubic Octahedral Grid model, an innovative approach that enhances modeling of complex weather patterns, especially in tropical regions.
The launch of the Bharat Forecast System was driven by a vision to transform India’s weather forecasting capabilities and provide actionable insights for a range of sectors. Key objectives include:
The Bharat forecast system forecasting accuracy has improved by 30% to 64%, depending on the type of weather event, making BFS one of the most accurate weather prediction systems globally.

The Bharat Forecast System is a first-of-its-kind indigenous solution with numerous advanced features that redefine how weather is forecasted in India:
BFS also represents a whole-of-government and whole-of-science collaboration, involving organizations like the India Meteorological Department (IMD), ISRO, and other scientific institutions. It stands as a tribute to modernizing traditional sectors like agriculture, improving climate resilience, and enabling smarter governance.
The Bharat Forecast System is not just a technological advancement but a strategic national asset. By offering precision, speed, and reach, it helps India move closer to its goal of becoming a global leader in climate science and disaster resilience. As Dr. Jitendra Singh aptly put it, “The efforts are Indian, the technology is Indian, and the beneficiaries are Indian” — a true embodiment of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
