Nidhi Tewari, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 2014 batch, has been appointed as the new Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She has been serving as the Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and is now set to take on this significant role.
Hailing from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of PM Modi since 2014, Nidhi Tewari has steadily built her career in diplomacy and government service.
Nidhi Tewari is a highly accomplished diplomat who has made remarkable contributions to the Indian government. She secured the 96th rank in the 2013 Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Before joining the IFS, she worked as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi.
Her appointment as the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister comes with responsibilities at Level 12 of the pay matrix. The order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on March 29, 2025, confirmed her new position, effective immediately, on a co-terminus basis or until further orders.

The order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training stated:
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Nidhi Tewari, IFS 2014, currently serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, as Private Secretary to the PM in Level 12 of the pay matrix with immediate effect on a co-terminus basis or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
As the Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nidhi Tewari will manage key administrative responsibilities and act as a liaison between the PMO and other government departments. Her experience in foreign affairs and national security makes her an ideal choice for this prestigious position.
