Operation Mahadev is a joint counter-terrorism Operation launched by Indian security forces, Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Jammu and Kashmir Police (J&K). indian Security forces have neutralised three terrorists who were involved in the horrible April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack. 

Operation Mahadev started on July 28, and security forces established contact with three terrorists concealed in a dense forest near Mahadev Peak, close to Dachigam National Park. A swift and intense exchange of fire ensued, leading to the neutralisation of all three terrorists.

Operation Mahadev is a counter-terrorism operation conducted by Indian security forces, including the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP), and CRPF, Srinagar (Lidwas area), on July 28, 2025. It aimed to neutralise terrorists hiding in the dense forests near Mahadev Peak, close to Dachigam National Park. Operation Mahadev resulted in the elimination of three terrorists, including the suspected mastermind of the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack.

Operation Mahadev Objectives

According to Indian Army, post  major objectives of Operation Mahadev in Jammu and Kashmir are given below:

  • To neutralise the terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam terror attack and are planning to carry terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, are covers the territory of India.
  • Strong Coordination between the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police to eliminate terrorists who are planning terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir to detail the growth and prosperity of J&K.
  • Advanced on-ground intelligence, aligned with active local community involvement, to kill terrorists 
  • Modern surveillance and rapid response proved crucial in intercepting and eliminating the threat of future attacks.

Operation Mahadev in J&K eliminated the Suleman alias Faizal. Afghan and Jibran, these three terrorists, were apprehended in a joint operation of the Indian Army, CRPF and J&K Police. Suleman was an A-category commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Afghan was an A-category Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist. And Jibran was also an A-grade terrorist. All three terrorists who killed our citizens in the Baisaran valley have been eliminated.

Operation was named after Mahadev Peak, a prominent summit in the Zabarwan Range near Srinagar, where the terrorists were hiding. The peak holds strategic and spiritual significance, as it overlooks the Lidwas and Mulnar areas and is a popular trekking route. 

Primary objective was to eliminate terrorists suspected of planning a major attack, potentially targeting the Amarnath Yatra or creating a hostage crisis in Srinagar. The operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs.

Three terrorists were killed: Suleiman Shah, a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander and former Pakistan Army SSG  commando, mastermind of the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. Jibran, a LeT terrorist involved in the October 2023 Sonamarg Tunnel attack and terrorist Hamza Afghani.
