What is Flag Code of India 2002?

Flag Code of India 2002  is a code implemented by the Government of India on 26 January 2002, which determines the rules according to which the national flag will be used. Until now, common citizens were not allowed to hoist the national flag freely, but this code handed over that right to every citizen, provided they follow it with respect.

Features of Flag Code of India

The Flag Code is divided into three parts:

Part I – General Description

• The tricolor’s size, colors, proportions (3:2), wheel positions, and construction instructions are included.

• Only the tricolor made of khadi or hand-woven cloth was officially valid, but after an amendment in 2022, machine-made and polyester flags were also allowed.

Part II – Instructions for Central and State Institutions

• The rules describe when and how government offices, agencies, and educational institutions may fly the flag.

Part III – Rules for ordinary citizens, private organizations, and other entities

• Now, any citizen, day and night, may hoist the flag, as long as it complies with the rules of the code.

National Flag Hoisting Rules

Here are the main rules, the national flag hoisting rules: 

• Tricolor should always be in a neat and monolithic state.
• The flag cannot be hoisted, inclined, or cracked.
• The flag should never be dropped on the ground or immersed in water.
• The flag cannot be worn on any costume, uniform, or clothing.
• There should not be any kind of garland, writing, or picture under the flag.
• Two flags cannot be flown on the same pole (if flown, the Tricolour must be on top).
• Flying at night is permitted only if the flag is illuminated with adequate light.
