Independence Day History

British dominance over India started in 1757 after the British victory at the Battle of Plassey, which paved the way for the British East India Company to transform itself from a trading company to a dominant military and political force in Indian. The British East India Company ruled India for a century until the British queen took over direct administration in India, known as the British Raj, following the Indian Uprising of 1857 (Sepoy Revolt). Although the uprising was suppressed by superior British forces, it marked the onset of widespread resentment against colonial authority.

India’s Independence movement was primarily led by the Indian National Congress (Congress Party), established in 1885 by A.O.Hume. One of the major widespread resistances in the fight for India’s freedom was the Swadeshi Movement (1905), launched as Indian resistance against the Partition of Bengal into two parts, East Bengal and West Bengal.

The Swadeshi movement gained significant attention during World War I (1914–18), with public dissatisfaction in British-controlled India due to oppressive legislation, such as the Rowlatt Act (1919), and the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (also 1919) and the inhumane rule of the Colonial British government. The tallest leader in the independence movement was Mahatma Gandhi, who believed in nonviolent protest through different movements like the non-cooperation movement (1920–22), the Salt March(Civil Disobedience Movement 1930), and the Quit India Movement (1942–43).

Prolonged quiet for Indian’s Independence led to the enactment of the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which divided the division of British-ruled India into two nations, India and Pakistan, effective at midnight on August 14–15, 1947. This unjust partition led to massive displacement and catastrophic violence, leaving thousands dead, injured, or homeless.
