VOICE OF GLOBAL SOUTH (Syllabus: GS Paper 2 – IR)

Context: India will host the second Voice of Global South Summit, with a focus on sharing with the members the key outcomes achieved in various G20 meetings during India's presidency of the grouping.

• This Summit is an initiative by India.
• Inaugural Theme: 'Together, for Everyone's Growth, with Everyone's Trust'
• Concluding Theme: 'Global South: Together for One Future
• Objective: The initiative aims to provide a "voice to the unheard," leveraging India's position as the current G20 president.

Global South

• About: The term "Global South" is used to describe countries frequently identified as developing, less developed, or underdeveloped. These nations are predominantly situated in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
• Global North countries: US, Canada, Europe, Russia, Australia and New Zealand, while ‘Global South’ includes countries in Asia, Africa and South America.
• Diverse Characteristics: The nations of the Global South are primarily lower-income countries, many of which are industrializing and were historically impacted by colonization.
• Need for Classification:

oEconomic and Geopolitical Scenario: Globally North and South phrases give a framework for comprehending worldwide differences in income, development, and geopolitical alliances.

oShared History of Colonialism: Many countries in the Global South have the same colonial experiences, and their growth challenges the Global North's supremacy.
