MIYAWAKI METHOD (Syllabus GS Paper 3 – Env and Eco)

Context: The Chhattisgarh Forest Department recently held a Van Mahotsav in the MCB district, where saplings were planted using the Miyawaki method.


Miyawaki Method

  • About: it is a dense afforestation technique that uses native plant species to create multilayered forests with perforators, water retainers, organic manure and mulch; guarantees a high survival and growth rate compared with conventional methods
  • Also called the: Potted seedling method
  • Developed by: Japanese botanist Professor Akira Miyawaki.
  • Objective: To densify green cover within small areas of land, promoting biodiversity and ecosystem health.
  • Self-Sustainability: Trees planted using the Miyawaki method reach their full length within three years and become self-sustaining, requiring minimal maintenance.
  • Benefits

o A dense green buffer between garbage mound and habitation/ national highway.

o At a test stage to see what kind of species will survive in the area.

o To act as a carbon sink.

o Results from this stretch to be used for greening more patches around landfill.
