Context: The President of India paid floral tributes to Shri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, former President of India on his birth anniversary.

  • About: He served as the fifth President of India from August 24, 1974, until his untimely death on February 11, 1977.
  • Contribution to Freedom Struggle: A loyal follower of Mahatma Gandhi, he actively participated in the individual Satyagraha and Quit India Movement, facing arrest in 1942.
  • Political Career: From his initial election to the Rajya Sabha in 1952 to subsequent roles in the Lok Sabha, he held portfolios ranging from Food and Agriculture to Company Laws.
  • Presidential Decisions: Notably, during his presidency, he declared a state of emergency in 1975 on the advice of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, emphasizing his commitment to upholding the Constitution.
  • Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Award: for Outstanding Research in Tribal Farming Systems.

  • Legacy: Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed passed away in office on February 11, 1977, making him the first Indian President to die while serving.
