The Answer is Fraternity

Context:  Recently, the significance of the word “fraternity” in our Constitution’s Preamble had been a subject for discussion in various forums.

Evolution of the word Fraternity in India’s constitution

  • Under “Fundamental Rights” resolution of the Indian National Congress in 1931: Gandhi, Patel, Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose and the passionate spirits of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, who had been hanged a few days earlier in Lahore, had an influence on these resolutions.
  • Ambedkar’s powerful text in 1936: (Annihilation of Caste) – where he highlighted the ideal society based in liberty, equality and fraternity.
  • “Objectives Resolution” 1947: while resembles the preamble but does not include the word “fraternity”.
  • Draft preamble 1948: signifies the first appearance of the word “fraternity.” 

Conclusion: As stated by Ambedkar “Without fraternity, equality and liberty will be no deeper than coats of paint.” The world’s present condition needs fraternity with all its spirit.
