US’s Definitive Propositions

  • Old paradigm of blind engagement with China has failed and has seen a dead end.
  • Need for collective action/ new alliance of democracies for addressing the new complex China challenge.

Implications/Consequences

  • Disengagement between global powers that have shaped Asian geopolitics and the global economy.
    • China is a large neighbour of India and America is India’s strategic partner.
  • Need to create new frameworks to cope with emerging global challenges. 
  • New Cold War with China is different from the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union.
  • Drawn attention to the unique nature of contemporary Chinese political structure (so-called party-state)
  • Idea of working with like-minded countries to balance China must be described as a “coalition of democracies”.

Prospects for India

  • India must pay close attention to the structural changes in American engagement with China.
    • America’s political and institutional sentiment in favour of rearranging the bilateral economic relationship with China
    • Resisting China’s expansionism and countering its influence.
  • India’s political partnership/ engagement with leading democracies. 
    • India has been a part of US’s initiative of “Community of Democracies”, democracy promotion fund at the United Nations, Asian quadrilateral of democracies and Quad Plus dialogue.
  • India’s readiness to reciprocate US’s proposed expansion of the G-7 summit as G-10/Group of Ten Democracies.
