Time For New Giant Electronic PSUs

Context: Ongoing India-China LAC conflict and the fading idea of global technological commons makes a strong call for the autonomous and self-reliant geopolitical role of India in the global order.

Prerequisites for Becoming an Autonomous Global Power

  • Technological nous (practical ability): in all advanced areas.
  • Focus on areas with a built-in advantage: like areas that require low-cost engineering manpower.
  • Microelectronics: being a capable and growth sector can offer competition to virtual monopolies.
  • The monopoly of a few firms in instrumentation and machinery for microelectronics.
  • Increased use of microelectronic with an increase in automation and the need for tracking
  • Focus on backward integration of microelectronics: making the instrumentation, software, and machines and not just making electronics assembly and microchips.
  • Plan for building up the microelectronic manufacturing: through its entire value chain.
  • Creation of new electronic public enterprises: for infusing motivation, definite goals, and sufficient funding into human capital.

Conclusion: India’s built-in advantage in its demographic dividend can create economic activity, competition, and diversify supply chains.
