Context: Policymakers must take cues from the 2020 rankings to improve the higher education sector.

Significance of National Institutional Ranking Framework raking 2020: 

  • Coverage: It covers universities, colleges, engineering and pharmacy colleges; and management schools.
  • Parameters: 5 composite parameters include:
  1. Teaching, learning, and resources
  2. Research and professional practice
  3. Graduation outcome
  4. Outreach and inclusivity 
  5. Perception
  • Specific observations: Topped by IIT Madras followed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and progressing institutions like Jamia Millia Islamia.
  • General observations: no major deviation from traditional performance patterns
  • Science-based universities are better in research and professional practice as compared to social science counterparts.
  • Public institutions are better performers compared to private institutions.
