Context: While the United Nations celebrated 75th anniversary, the global multilateralism is under threat from trust deficit and failure to step up during time of need such as the current pandemic.

Threat to UN and multilateralism on large:

    • Structural shift in global order: Today’s economic and political focus has changed from safeguarding Europe at the end of World War 2 to Indo-Pacific.
    • While, China challenges the global order since it was created in its absence, the United States as an important founder of the UN is also dissatisfied with the status-quo.
        • Failure in implementing reforms: has resulted into growing trust deficit between the UN and the nations.
        • Non-representation of India as a permanent member despite being the largest democracy  (more then 18% of total population) with number of language, ideologies and economic scale.
          • Failure of liberal order: which maintained peace and prosperity for seven decades, to provide equitable and effective solutions to common challenges.
          • Proliferation of plurilateral and mini-lateral forums: has weakened the UN as a leading institutional global mechanism.

Conclusion: India being selected as non-permanent member at UN Security Council  has called for new template to multilateralism that ‘reflects today’s reality, give voice to all stakeholders, address contemporary challenges and focus on Human Welfare’.
