DEFINITION

National Register of Citizens (NRC):  
  • Definition: The NRC is an official record of those who are legal Indian citizens. It includes demographic information about all those individuals who qualify as citizens of India as per the Citizenship Act, 1955. 
  • The register was first prepared after the 1951 Census of India and since then it has not been updated until recently.
Deemed Forests:
  • Definition: Deemed Forest is forest land that hasn’t been recorded as such by the Centre or States. 
  • The concept of deemed forests has not been clearly defined in any law including the Forest Conservation Act of 1980.
  • The Supreme Court in the Godavarman case (1996) accepted a wide definition of forests i.e., according to its dictionary meaning i.e., land having the characteristic of forests irrespective of the ownership.
