Context

  • In a major push for Renewable Energy, Recently, Uttar Pradesh signed an MoU with Yamanashi Prefecture’s hydrogen company, promising Japanese collaboration in production, storage, supply chain development, and R&D via state universities and IITs.

Points to Consider

  • Japanese stakeholders have announced the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for green hydrogen in UP, utilizing advanced Japanese technology.
  • The announcement follows a high‑level delegation visit to Japan, where Uttar Pradesh officials visited Yamanashi’s NESRAD Green Hydrogen Plant, power‑to‑gas facilities, and hydrogen research labs where they explored about the development of Hydrogen Energy in Japan and implement same in Uttar Pradesh
  • Focus on Zero-Emission Transport: During the visit, the UP delegation explored several breakthrough technologies, including the next-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, Toyota Mirai.
    • This vehicle runs on a combination of hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water as a byproduct, aligning with Uttar Pradesh’s vision for a zero-emission transport policy.

Significance for Uttar Pradesh

  • Strategic Clean Energy Push: UP’s CoE will drive innovation and attract advanced Japanese technology, positioning UP as a national green hydrogen hub and bringing in more investment.
  • Investment & Job Growth: Large investments are expected to translate into thousands of jobs, local manufacturing, and cleaner industrial activity providing jobs to local youth and contributing to Uttar Pradesh GDP.
  • Green Hydrogen Technological Advancements: The adoption of advanced Japanese hydrogen fuel cell technology will drive cleaner, sustainable transport, reduce green house gas emission, and contribute to the state's clean energy goals by diversifying renewable power generation methods.

About Hydrogen

  • Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, but on Earth, it makes up only 0.14% of the Earth's crust by mass, ranking as the 10th most abundant element.

Types of Hydrogen

Green Hydrogen

Green Hydrogen is Hydrogen produced by splitting water by electrolysis. This produces only Hydrogen and Oxygen. We can use the Hydrogen and vent the Oxygen to the atmosphere with no negative impact.

It is called green because no CO2 emission during the production process.

Blue Hydrogen

Blue Hydrogen is when natural gas is split into Hydrogen and CO2, but the CO2 is captured and then stored.

As the greenhouse gasses are captured, this mitigates the environmental impacts on the planet.

Grey Hydrogen

It is a similar process to Blue Hydrogen as natural gas is split into Hydrogen and CO2,, but the CO2 is not being captured and is released into the atmosphere.

Black/Brown Hydrogen

Brown Hydrogen (made from brown coal) and Black Hydrogen (made from black coal) are produced via gasification.

It is a very polluting process and CO2 and Carbon Monoxide are produced as by-products and released to the atmosphere.

Turquoise Hydrogen

Extracted by using the thermal splitting of Methane via Methane Pyrolysis. The process, though at the experimental stage remove the Carbon in a solid form instead of CO2.

Purple Hydrogen

Made using nuclear power and heat through combined chemo- thermal electrolysis splitting of water.

Pink Hydrogen

Generated through electrolysis of water by using electricity from a nuclear power plant.

Red Hydrogen

Produced through the high-temperature catalytic splitting of water using nuclear power thermal as an energy source.

White hydrogen

Naturally occurring hydrogen
