Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S

Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) : Recently, the latest climate data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) revealed that the first four months of 2025 have been the warmest on record.

o Global surface air temperatures have remained consistently high, with April 2025 marking the second-warmest April ever documented.

  • Key Highlights: April 2025 Temperature: Average surface temperature was 14.96°C, 0.60°C above the 1991-2020 average.

o Comparison with April 2024: Slightly cooler than the hottest April on record, but still 1.51°C above pre-industrial levels, maintaining temperatures above the 1.5°C threshold for 21 of the last 22 months.

o 12-Month Average: From May 2024 to April 2025, global temperatures were 1.58°C higher than pre-industrial levels.

o Sea Surface Temperatures (SST): April 2025 SST was 20.89°C, the second-highest on record, with the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea showing exceptional warmth.

o Arctic and Antarctic Sea Ice: Arctic sea ice was 3% below average, the sixth-lowest on record, while Antarctic sea ice was 10% below average.

  • About C3S: A flagship EU program, provides climate data, tools, and services to monitor and adapt to climate change.

o Data Coverage: Provides global/regional climate data (temperature, sea levels, GHGs) via satellite and ground sources.

o Applications: Aids policy-making, risk assessment, and resilience in key sectors.

o Open Access: Free, transparent data available through the Climate Data Store (CDS).

o Global Collaboration: Partners with WMO and others for climate monitoring and response.
