Oil Pollution In India: Impacts, Government/International Initiatives

Discover the causes, impacts, and solutions to oil pollution in India, including its effects on marine ecosystems, government policies, and international initiatives.

Oil pollution is also known as oil contamination or oil spills, refers to the release of crude oil or refined petroleum products into water bodies. This can occur due to accidents involving oil tankers, pipelines, offshore drilling rigs, or other industrial activities.

  • Ex – Chennai oil spill in 2023 which severely impacted Chennai’s eco sensitive Ennore creek.

Impacts Of Oil Pollution On The Marine Ecosystem: Harm to Marine Life, Toxicity, Disruption of Food Chain

  • Harm to Marine Life: Oil spills coat the feathers of seabirds and fur of marine animals, disrupting their ability to regulate body temperature and leading to hypothermia.
  • Toxicity: Components of crude oil are toxic to marine organisms, causing organ damage and impairing reproductive capabilities.
  • Habitat Destruction: Oil spills can destroy critical habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass beds, and marshes, which are vital for the survival of various marine species.
  • Disruption of Food Chain: The loss of biodiversity due to oil contamination can disrupt the food chain, as the death of primary producers like phytoplankton affects the entire ecosystem.
  • India’s extensive coastline, stretching approximately 7,500 kilometers along the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, increases its vulnerability, particularly to coastal issues.

Oil Pollution

  • Fur-Bearing Mammals and Birds: Oil destroys the insulating ability of fur-bearing mammals, such as sea otters, and the water repellency of a bird’s feathers, exposing these creatures to the harsh elements.

WAY FORWARD

  • Strict Regulations: Leverage blockchain technology for better transparency, similar to its use in the diamond industry for ethical sourcing, to ensure responsible shipping operations and minimize risks of oil spills.
  • Virtual Reality (VR) Workshops: Utilize VR technology to educate coastal communities about the catastrophic effects of oil spills through workshops, potentially organized by organizations like UNESCO.
  • AI for Predictive Analysis: Develop an AI tool for predictive analysis of potential oil spill incidents, inspired by IBM’s PAIRS Geoscope, to analyze parameters like weather patterns and shipping routes.
  • International Collaboration: Support dialogue and collaboration among maritime industry stakeholders through initiatives like the ‘Global Maritime Forum’ annual summit to address oil pollution and other sectoral challenges.
  • Nano-Technology in Cleanup: Advanced cleanup technologies using nanotechnology, such as MIT’s research on nanowire meshes for separating oil from water, to improve the effectiveness of oil spill responses.
  • Solar and Wind Propelled Ships: Promote the transition to renewable energy sources in maritime transport, as demonstrated by Eco Marine Power’s work on solar and wind-propelled ships, proving the feasibility and benefits of cleaner energy solutions.

GOVERNMENT/INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES

  • National Oil-spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOSDCP) in 1993: It allocated functional responsibilities to various ministries and departments for oil-spill response in the Maritime Zones of India.
  • The ports are responsible for oil-spill clean-up within port limits, and oil-handling agencies are responsible for oil-spill clean-up upto 500 meters around the oil-handling installations.
  • Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): Governments create MPAs by designating specific areas as protected, restricting human activities like fishing, mining, and oil drilling, and implementing stringent regulations for tourism and other activities.
  • The London Convention (1972): It aims to promote effective control over all sources of marine pollution and to take all feasible measures to prevent sea pollution caused by the dumping of wastes and other materials.
  • MARPOL Convention (1973): It is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.
