NCERT books are the foundation for many competitive exams in India, especially the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Understanding the key differences in content, approach, and presentation in Old NCERT vs New NCERT books helps aspirants make the right choice for their preparation. This article discusses the comparison between Old and New NCERTs and their significance for UPSC preparation.

Old NCERT vs New NCERT Overview

The primary purpose of reading NCERT books for IAS preparation is to build a strong foundation. These books introduce students to the basics of subjects covered in the UPSC syllabus. A thorough understanding of NCERT books helps in writing analytical answers and performing well in the Mains examination.

Old NCERTs

  • Old NCERTs are detailed and provide in-depth knowledge of subjects.
  • They are useful for subjects like History and Geography.
  • Many reference books used for UPSC preparation are based on Old NCERTs (e.g., books by R.S. Sharma, Satish Chandra, and Bipan Chandra).
  • Sciencedirect questions are rarely asked from these books, it is not mandatory to read them. However, they are beneficial for students who have History or Geography as optional subjects.

New NCERTs

  • New NCERT books include colorful images, examples, and stories to make learning interesting.
  • They provide enough information for UPSC preparation.
  • Since aspirants also refer to additional books, New NCERTs serve as a good starting point.
  • If a candidate is new to subjects like Indian History or Geography, starting with NCERT books (old or new) is recommended.
