Context: Subsidised medical education should serve the public interest.

Doctors Abnegating their Responsibility:

  • Denying medical facilities: exposes betrayal of Hippocratic oath demonstrating the sorry state of affairs.
  • Refusing to work in rural areas: 85% of the MBBS graduates in Gujrat opted out of serving in a rural area after passing out from government institutions.
  • SC has asked the states to devise a uniform policy regarding compulsory service.

Infrastructural and resource adequacies: to be ensured by the generation of more funds through a hike in the fees of medical education as done by Punjab recently.

Way Forward: PM’s stated work of ensuring every district with a medical college would ensure disposal of ample doctors to provide affordable healthcare for all. All the stakeholders should work together in the public interest.
