Maharatna Scheme was introduced for Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) in\u00a0 2010 to empower mega CPSEs to expand their operations and emerge as global giants<\/b>. The objective of the Maharatna scheme is to delegate enhanced powers to the Boards of identified large-sized Navratna CPSEs to facilitate expansion of their operations, both in domestic as well as global markets. Maharashtra companies play a very significant role in the nation’s growth.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are Maharatna Companies?<\/b><\/h2>\n

“Maharatna,” meaning “great jewel,<\/b>” shows their critical role in the economy.<\/span> A Maharatna company are government-owned public enterprise that holds the highest level of operational autonomy granted to Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).<\/b> The Government of India introduced the Maharatna category in 2010 to recognise large, high-performing CPSEs with the potential to expand globally. There are 14 Maharatna companies in India as of 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n
