Traditionally, the Santhals had been agriculturists, depending on the land for their livelihood. The Santhal community had a strong social structure, with their society being organised into various clans known as \u2018parhas.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Also read &#8211;<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/theiashub.com\/free-resources\/news-crux-10\/santhal-community-syllabus-gs-paper-1-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Santhal community<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Was Santhal Rebellion?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Santhal Rebellion 1855-1856 was an \u201corganised war against colonialism\u201d<\/b> <b>led by the Santhals,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> standing against the highest forms of oppression \u2013 culturally, economically and otherwise \u2013 they were subjected to by the British and their collaborator, zamindars and corrupt moneylenders(Mahajan). <\/span><b>Santhal Rebellion was Led by two brothers, Sidhu and Kanhu. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It saw the participation of as many as 32 castes and communities rallying behind them. The seeds of the Santhal rebellion, however, were sown in 1832 when the East India Company created the <\/span><b>Damin-i-Koh region (skirt of hill &#8211; Where they were enjoying revenue-free collective land holding)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the<\/span><b> forested belt of the Rajmahal hill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s. The area was allocated to the Santhals displaced from Birbhum, Murshidabad, Bhagalpur, Barabhum, Manbhum, Palamau, and Chhotanagpur, all areas of the Bengal Presidency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Also read <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/theiashub.com\/free-resources\/mains-marks-booster\/important-modern-history-events-before-1857\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Revolts Before 1857<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Santhal Rebellion Causes\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santhal Rebellion was driven by a confluence of economic, social, and cultural grievances, as given below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Santhal Rebellion&#8217;s major cause was the Permanent Settlement tax system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was introduced by the British government in some of the regions such as Bihar, Orissa and Bengal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the<\/span><b> Permanent Settlement tax in 1793<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the British government started putting a particular section of land up for auction if the peasants were unable to pay the rent. This instigated the Santhal Rebellion.\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The original landlords during the time of the Santhal Revolt could own the land as long as they paid a particular amount to the government.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gradually, the tax amount also increased to a great extent, which left the Santhals with no choice but to revolt against the British government. The revolt came to be known as the Santhal Revolt.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another cause of the <\/span><b>Santhal Rebellion was the \u2018barter system\u2019 i<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n which the tribal people were facing issues in returning the payment in the form of cash, resulting in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> frequent loss of land due to their inability to meet financial demands.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santhals faced cultural marginalisation as British policies and upper-caste dominance undermined their cultural beliefs and traditional practices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rebellion embodied a millenarian movement, with leaders Sidhu and Kanhu Murmu claiming divine inspiration from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thakur Bonga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to establish a utopian <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santhal Raj<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> free from oppression.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Santhal Rebellion Key Events<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Santhal Rebellion was a revolt by the Santhal tribal people against the British East India Company\u2019s oppressive zamindari system in the Bengal Presidency. It was <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an uprising against the exploitative <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diku<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> system, which has several critical phases and is given below:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Beginning<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santhal Rebellion began on June 30, 1855, when brothers <\/span><b>Sidhu, Kanhu, Chand, and Bhairav Murmu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, alongside their sisters <\/span><b>Phulo and Jhano Murmu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mobilised around <\/span><b>10,000\u201360,000 Santhals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at <\/span><b>Bhognadih<\/b> <b>to launch the rebellion.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santhal fighters used <\/span><b>traditional weapons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like bows, arrows, axes, and spears. They did not have modern guns like the British. However, their <\/span><b>determination, courage, and unity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave them strength.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santhals: <\/span><b>Burned government offices, destroyed records of debt and land ownership, attacked corrupt moneylenders and British police stations, established their own form of governance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, collected taxes and settled disputes without British help<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Guerrilla Warfare Technique<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Santhal tribe used traditional weapons such as bows, arrows, and spears, and utilised guerrilla tactics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, capitalising on their intimate knowledge of the local terrain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sannthal <\/span><b>targeted symbols of colonialism and the zamindari system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including police stations, zamindar estates, railway lines, and indigo factories.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Santhal Rebellion secured control over significant areas, including parts of the Rajmahal Hills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Bhagalpur<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Birbhum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> districts, disrupting colonial communication networks, such as postal and railway systems.*<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>\u00a0British Response<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>At first, the British officials were shocked and unprepared.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But soon, they brought in a large number of trained British and Indian troops under <\/span><b>Major General G.W.A. Lloyd. The Santhals were surrounded and attacked from many directions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to their lack of advanced weapons, many Santhal fighters were killed<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Their villages were burned, <\/span><b>and thousands of Santhal men, women, and children lost their lives. Even Sidhu and Kanhu Murmu were captured and executed.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>By the middle of 1856, the rebellion was completely crushed, and <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British suppression was brutal, resulting in an estimated <\/span><b>15,000 Santhal deaths<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including leaders <\/span><b>Sidhu and Kanhu, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the destruction of villages.<\/span><b> But the spirit of the Santhal people could never be broken.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Outcomes of the Santhal Rebellion\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Santhal Rebellion, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">though brutally suppressed by the British forces, However, it had major Outcomes that are given below:<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>British Policy Changes<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>After seeing the tribal anger, the British created a separate administrative region called Santhal Parganas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to provide some protection to the tribal land and culture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Laws like the Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act were later passed to control exploitation. However other leaders played the important role given below;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Brothers Kanhu and Sidho Murmu hailed from the Santhal clan, Murmu. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They led the rebellion against the British tax regime and the zamindars&#8217; exploitation on <\/span><b>June 30, 1855. Utilising traditional weapons and local terrain knowledge, they focused on reclaiming Santhal lands and challenging British authority.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sisters Phulo and Jhano Murmu joined forces. With Phulo and Jhano joining the rebellion, more women took up arms against the British. They help in <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combat and mobilisation, rallying Santhal women and exemplifying the community\u2019s collective resistance. Its significance is given below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major significance of the Santhal Rebellion was that it <\/span><b>threw light on the complicated Zamindari system introduced by the East India Company.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was because of the revolt that t<\/span><b>he harsh reality of the Zamindari system was brought to light. Later, the British government&#8217;s Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act was passed.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Santhal Rebellion was also significant as it <\/span><b>exposed the cruelty of the lenders who exploited the ignorant Santhal tribals and demanded extremely high interest rates on the loans they provided to them.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebellion established a powerful<\/span><b> Santhal identity, rights, and self-determination. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through this uprising, the Santhals articulated their grievances, striving to protect their ancestral lands, cultural heritage, and communal dignity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Santhal Rebellion served as a beacon for later tribal and agrarian uprisings across India. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It exemplified the tenacity and bravery of Indigenous communities in confronting systemic oppression and exploitation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rebellion prompted significant reforms in the British colonial administration of tribal regions.
