It was designed as a unique project aimed at identifying, documenting, conserving, and making accessible India&#8217;s rich manuscript heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is home to one of the largest manuscript collections in the world, estimated to be around <\/span><b>ten million manuscripts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These manuscripts cover a wide range of themes, textures, aesthetics, languages, scripts, calligraphies, illuminations, and illustrations, making them a repository of knowledge that spans millennia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_National_Mission_for_Manuscripts\"><\/span><b>What is the National Mission for Manuscripts?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>National Mission for Manuscripts <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an initiative launched by the Indian government to preserve and protect India&#8217;s manuscript heritage. Operating under the <\/span><b>Department of Culture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the <\/span><b>Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IGNCA) as the nodal agency, the mission aims to identify, catalog, conserve, and make accessible manuscripts from temples, libraries, museums, and private collections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was created in response to the deterioration of manuscripts stored in improper conditions. The mission seeks to retrieve and safeguard these invaluable historical records for public knowledge, as emphasized by former President <\/span><b>Shri R. By establishing a robust network of institutions, resource centres, and databases, the mission has successfully ensured the documentation, conservation, and accessibility of invaluable manuscripts.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Network Development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Established a network of partner institutions for manuscript documentation and preservation, including <\/span><b>57 Manuscript Resource Centres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MRCs), <\/span><b>33 Manuscript Partner Centres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MPCs), and <\/span><b>50 Manuscript Conservation Centres <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(MCCs), with 30 currently operational.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Manuscript Documentation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Documented<\/span><b> 44.07 lakh manuscripts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating the largest database of Indian manuscripts, with over<\/span><b> 3.4 million entries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the web-based National Database.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>National Surveys &amp;
